Where Am I?

My Expat-terns

54. Nothing beats getting a haircut in a foreign country. What is more intimate? A conversation with a nice trim is the best way to get to know a city from a local.
38. People often travel to escape and start fresh. I’ve done it; I am not ashamed. However unless you are truly nomadic, you will have to return to dwell in familiarity eventually. Always make sure you have a home waiting for you. Of course, “a home” is a loose definition.
16. You don’t need to “dress to impress”, but make an effort to blend into the culture. Wear a scarf, shave, and/or loss the sneakers when appropriate.
75. If you as a citizen of the United States are often abroad during important national holidays, I recommend doing very American activities to compensate for your utter lack of patriotism. Nothing obnoxious of course, but why not spend a little time at Starbucks on the 4th of July in Prague or buy something online you definitely do not need on Labor Day in Taiwan? Very American.
103. It is really unfortunate when you feel safer out of your country as a whole.
120. Greeks can be a little cliquey going out, unfortunately.
42. Drink a lot of water when you are traveling especially when you are sick. Just do it.
21. When you get a new map, always mark where your home is. Even if it’s off the grid, keep it in mind. Sometimes you forget.
6. Just because you have an outlet adapter that doesn’t mean you’ll be able to charge your technology well.
113. When it comes to national holidays, independence days and such, remember those who were not the “nationals” who helped build the nation and especially what nations were and still are there.
