Who to Follow in 2014

Sorry about my atrocious handwriting. Anyway, what are your new year’s resolutions? I should try some more foreign foods and read a few extra travel stories this year. Hopefully I get to go to Asia or possibly Europe too? Iceland (Photo by PintsizedPioneer)

What social media do you use: Facebook, Twitter, or maybe, smoke signals? Personally all three are at my disposal, but that’s just my means of communication. What are yours? Expat-terns doesn’t have its own Facebook or Twitter page yet, but you don’t have to deny yourself from awesome social media pages dedicated to travel due to this blog’s social media absence. We understand – it’s not cheating.

Try some of these Twitter pages or check out these blogs to kick start the new year. Some of them aren’t that unknown, but some were very new and surprising for me at least. Many of these Twitter accounts come from the list of blogs I follow located on the bottom left of this page. It is sort of interesting to see the difference between articles and tweets. Vernacular is thrown around a lot these days. Also, most of these blogs were regarded as some of the best of 2013, let’s see how they progress this solar cycle! Here’s who to look out for this year:

On Twitter

@GoAbroad – I recently have been featured on the site, so I had to promote them. Besides that, it features posts regularly about language, teaching, careers, internships etc. It’s an amazing resource – Don’t let it go to waste.

@CollegeTourist – Frequently updated with stories and information on student life abroad, it also features articles on tips and advice for current and future students. Learn about fun things you can do before and after culture shock, future opportunities, and foreign recipes to try.

@TheAbroadGuide – A fun, cutesy, and thorough Twitter account about destinations for your study abroad future. Gain some insight about foreign universities, packing, and the activities to do while overseas.

@StudyAbroad101– A useful page that gives great advice and links to fun articles. It is a fairly large abroad review account. See what you can find out about some potential study abroad programs first hand. Via Twitter.

@NatGeoTravel – Is it really necessary to describe this? It’s National Geographic Travel. [Harmonious Music Plays]

Blogs

y Travel Blog – An adorable, intelligent blog by a loving Australian family! It is filled to the brim with travel tips for food to technology. It also has information on countries all across the world, probably as a result of all the places they have visited (40+). Did I forget to mention they have a published book too? Thank you Caz and Craig (The fantastic bloggers responsible)!

Have Baby Will Travel – I think I am on a cutesy blog kick because this next one is precious. It’s a travel blog specifically centered around traveling with a baby! Blogger Corinne McDermott shows the challenges and joys of living with wanderlust and having small children. Read advice, stories, and experiences on traveling with adorable small people. It is heart warming and very informative for adults who think having kids means putting travel on hold.

Turkish Travel Blog – A little specific but still a great blog. Interested in going to Turkey, learning about Turkish culture, Turkish food, Turkey’s geography etc. Go to this blog! This expat writer living in Turkey (What a fun life!) paints a great picture of the Sick Man of Europe -a country that possibly could use a sobriquet change?

Ordinary Traveler – With great title, comes great responsibility. Christy and Scott, another globetrotting duo, share great insight on domestic and international travel. It has information on food, nature excursions, and even surfing (a personal interest)! It’s a very youthful blog to say the least. Learn some great travel tips, see some beautiful photography, and read a plethora of down to earth articles from these “Ordinary Travelers”.

The Travel Bite – I love food. You should know this by now. The Travel Bite is essentially for foreign food. Glorious food! Learn how to celebrate in style abroad with the most tasty treats. From Hong Kong to Mexico City to even Cape Town, learn recipes for some great exotic dishes and learn about their destinations of origin too. First learn how to make curry then learn to wear a sari – It’s a system. Don’t forget to check out the photo gallery! This blog is delicious in every sense of the word.

If you have any suggestions of what I should read, comment below.

Also do you have any plans this year? I’d love to hear ’em. This is such a small list. It’s sad that so many other bloggers, travelers, and expatriates are left out, but it’s just the beginning of 2014.

More stories, features, and promotions for other (probably more experienced) globetrotters are sure to come. 2014 is going to be informative, fun, and full of new experiences. A journey awaits.
