It snowed today in Santiago! Beautiful, right? Not when you’re standing out in the cold during a big soccer (fútbol) game …
I was lucky enough to see the U. Católica vs. Sevilla FC game here in Chile. It’s part of the Copa Euroamerica, which I know nothing about … However, I do know that this match was pretty crowded, cold, and almost exclusively UC fans. It was awesome despite the fact that my team didn’t even score.
It’s just a stellar experience: a fútbol match in South America. Fans shouting Spanish profanity, random local, Chilean cheers, and vendors selling almost everything make the event unforgettable.
The snow made it so much better/worse. No one was expecting it, which made playing conditions slippery, and the fans, more excitable. However, it did freeze up my hands. Apparently, Santiago hasn’t had this bad of weather in a few years – we were due.
I really experienced Chile tonight – or at least Chilean pride. Too bad that U. Católica lost though (2-0 Sevilla FC)! It’s amazing to me how enthusiastic everyone is during these games – even the little children are calling the opponent’s goalie a “mother fucker” en español. ¡Qué adorable! More to come soon, if the weather doesn’t prevent my traveling!
