My Expat-terns

2. Avoid saying you’re American while trying to bargain abroad. It may be harder to get a good deal.
101. It is difficult to completely forget a language that is important to you. Though, things can fade regardless.
92. Do not let your ethno/national-centrism get the best of you. For example, Canadians do celebrate Thanksgiving; it is just in October, not November. If you go to the store Thanksgiving weekend thinking it will be a normal shopping spree, you will be punished for your ignorance when you cannot find any goddamn pecans or rosemary.
59. Nothing is more obnoxious than an entitled traveler, especially one who doesn’t even realize it or worse, doesn’t care.
28. Take advantage of your climate. If you are in a perpetually overcast location and the sun appears: Go out and enjoy it. The same goes for the rain. Enjoy your environment especially the surprises it gives.
85. Never steal anything from the VIP section of the club. Just never. This should go without saying, but you would be surprised by the stupidity and insolence of some individuals.
84. Sometimes, it is better to go home early, especially if your health is in question. You may miss out on some adventures, but there will be more. There always are.
109. It is common in Rwandan culture to have one or two personal talents. What are your talents?
45. Gaining certain alliances and supporting foreign nations demonstrates great levels of acceptance and fraternity on your behalf, but not everything you pick from other countries is always beneficial or politically correct. For example after living in Chile, I cannot stand the Argentine accent. The rivalry has been ingrained!
83. Go to countries where you really don’t understand a word; it is all the more thrilling.
