Where Am I?

My Expat-terns

49. Put sense of place above all else.
15. Returning to a life of normalcy and routine is not giving up your adventurous spirit.
39. You can judge a place by the quality of its poutine.
33. Who is to say you can’t learn to speak Finnish, Mongolian, or Tagalog? It never occurred to me that someone cannot learn a new language. With enough perseverance, passion, trust, and creativity you can speak any tongue. Never let anyone tell you otherwise.
78. When traveling, it’s always interesting to learn the rivalries and grudges that some nations still have for each other even if it’s a little passé nowadays to have or acknowledge them.
67. You will always be disadvantaged in life in some way, abroad or otherwise, but that doesn’t mean that you are helpless.
28. Take advantage of your climate. If you are in a perpetually overcast location and the sun appears: Go out and enjoy it. The same goes for the rain. Enjoy your environment especially the surprises it gives.
107. Rwandans are not afraid of physical intimacy. Men will hold hands with each other, and women will be arm and arm. Nevertheless, homosexuality is still not accepted.
13. You and your host family should try to learn from each other. That means you both have to be open minded.
124. As a rule of thumb, it is good to at least be able to read more than one alphabet/orthography; it can help out in a pinch.
