Where Am I?

My Expat-terns

78. When traveling, it’s always interesting to learn the rivalries and grudges that some nations still have for each other even if it’s a little passé nowadays to have or acknowledge them.
19. When you cook, accept that you are going to get messy. When you let go of the idea of keeping your kitchen clean when you try to make 뚝만두국 (Korean Dumpling Soup) or Tres Leches Cake, it will taste so much better and cook so much easier.
114. What you “home cook” often tells what culture(s) you’re from. It is one of the most honest indicators.
24. You don’t have to convert or become a devout follower of the faith, but enjoy and experience the many beliefs of this world. They vary from ritual to messiah, so try some out for size when traveling. Visit a mosque or dance a kagura. You never know which spiritualities will be the most fun, if any.
123. Find someone who makes you feel like you are everywhere when you are with them.
46. Get into a dance off with a local.
38. People often travel to escape and start fresh. I’ve done it; I am not ashamed. However unless you are truly nomadic, you will have to return to dwell in familiarity eventually. Always make sure you have a home waiting for you. Of course, “a home” is a loose definition.
94. As just a heads up, Turkish and Swahili are perfect languages in which to learn about affixes.
34. Sometimes life is so complicated, surprising, and/or just bizarre at an instance, all you can do is throw your arms in the air, equate the situation to where you are, and exclaim, “Because [Insert Country’s Name]!” For example, you might find about 600 Soles in your host family’s oven while looking for food – Because Peru!
71. Nothing is more refreshing than a little flirting on the sidewalk with a new friend after a long night of dancing even if you get a bit lost in translation; that’s the cute part.

And now, all in my own countree, I stood on the fi And now, all in my own countree,
I stood on the firm land!
The Hermit stepped forth from the boat,
And scarcely he could stand.

'O shrieve me, shrieve me, holy man!'
The Hermit crossed his brow.
'Say quick,' quoth he, 'I bid thee say—
What manner of man art thou?'
당신은 도대체 어떤 사람이오?

Forthwith this frame of mine was wrenched
With a woful agony,
Which forced me to begin my tale;
And then it left me free.

즉시 내 몸은
참담한 고뇌로 뒤틀리고
나는 내 이야기를 시작하게 돼소
그러자 내 가슴이 후련해졌소

Since then, at an uncertain hour,
That agony returns:
And till my ghastly tale is told,
This heart within me burns.

그 때 이래로 불시로
그 고뇌는 다시 찾아 오지요
그러면 내 끔찍한 이야기가 다 끝날 때까지
내 가슴은 답답하지요

I pass, like night, from land to land;
I have strange power of speech;
That moment that his face I see,
I know the man that must hear me:
To him my tale I teach.

I will always love you, Halabaji #사랑해
