Where Am I?

My Expat-terns

18. Doing sink laundry is an art form every backpacker needs to learn. All you need is a sink, powdered detergent, and manual labor.
49. Put sense of place above all else.
31. Frugality is fantastic. Don’t spend extra money that you don’t have to. If you are in a host family, perhaps just eat with them for free. It is always good to know exactly what you want to buy if you get souvenirs, and haggling can save you some dough. It takes work sometimes to spend less.
52. Book early – Flights, hostels, and work arrangements. Be organized and pay beforehand. For long trips, I’d say schedule a few months in advance.
17. To swagger back conceited and contemptuous from an adventure is an ironic setback for us all.
100. Understand the land where you travel. This means more than simply knowing, “X country is between the Y sea and Z mountain range.” No. It is about whose land it is rightfully, what it is/was used for, and understanding your status on it.
47. Cherish every moment before a long journey. Savor every amenity you possess, but also get drunk on the excitement that is about to unfold. The intoxication of the pre-adventure process is so joyous.
28. Take advantage of your climate. If you are in a perpetually overcast location and the sun appears: Go out and enjoy it. The same goes for the rain. Enjoy your environment especially the surprises it gives.
16. You don’t need to “dress to impress”, but make an effort to blend into the culture. Wear a scarf, shave, and/or loss the sneakers when appropriate.
40. Do not harass Canadians. Don’t make fun of their stereotypical polite image. The majority are just fabulous, friendly people. You should be so lucky to be Canadian.
